Musts for Overcoming Depression Naturally

Posted on 2010-07-14 12:11:42

5 Musts For Overcoming Depression

1.  Exercise - It is well-known by everyone in the medical field that exercise is the safest, cheapest, most effective, and easiest treatment.  Here is the interesting part - Exercise is usually more effective in the long run than prescription medications.  Study after study has shown this to be true time and time again.  For the perfect workout check out Empower Wellness Center - New Braunfels's Facebook page.

2.  Get Control of Your Stress - This may be by taking timeouts during a stressful event by practicing some deep breathing, taking time out of everyone of your days to do something you want to do that relaxes you.  Yoga and Pilates classes are great ways to control stress but a kickboxing class can be just as therapeutic.  Once again....start moving.  Find someone you can trust and have a confidant.  People were meant to have relationships with our fellow brothers and sisters.  Finding these people and sharing life with them can have multiple positive outcomes

3.  Eat Healthier - If your blood sugar is bouncing around throughout the day, your mood will too.  Increase intake of fruits and vegetable and natural proteins.  These foods will help regulate blood sugar and give your brain the chemicals needed to operate correctly.

4.  Fish Oil and Vitamin D - These two supplements are essential for optimal brain functioning.  Omega three fatty acids are main components for the nervous system and are deficient in most of the population.  A study found that people with the lowest levels of vitamin D were eleven times more prone to depression than those who had normal levels.  Have these levels evaluated by a wellness doctor regularly!

5.  Practice Positive Self-Talk - This may be the most difficult of all the lifestyle changes to accomplish.  Thinking positive thoughts when depressed can seem almost impossible.  Start by finding a positive affirmation to read aloud several times a day.  Even if you don't believe the words that are coming out of your mouth at first, repetitive reciting of affirmations will begin to change your brain's chemistry for the better.  Don't believe this simple action can have drastic results? Read "The Brain That Changes Itself" by Norman Doidge, M.D.  He'll provide all the necessary evidence.

More important than any of these tips is to Trust In God and know that He is with you at all times!  Life usually doesn't follow the path we have envisioned for ourselves and asking The Good Lord for guidance during our darkest moments is always necessary!
